Dinner in West Caldwell
Dinner-in-West-Caldwell
This was a dinner get-together at a great Italian place in West Caldwell with all Irvingtonians.

Left to right: Dean Braithwaite, Class of 71, John Manning, Class of 71, Charlie Lombard, Class of 72, Paul Lobozzo, Class of 71, Craig Schreiner, Class of 71, Al Shave, Class of 66 and standing Joey Vargas, Class of 72. At the end of the meal, stumblin’, mumblin’ Al Shave broke out his harmonica and did some blues right at the table in the restaurant. A unique ending to a great time amongst old friends.

What We Did Together

Irvington-ParkIrvington Park for me was just magnificent. When my family first moved there, I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. It had everything you could possibly want. And I lived right on Lyons Ave. directly across the street from the park. It just couldn’t have been any better for a young sports-minded kid like me.

More on that in a bit, but just as great for me were all the people whom I was so fortunate to be able to hang out with. I loved all these people above and we had the most amazing times day in and day out. I just couldn’t wait to see everybody walk into the park one by one to join us. And we hung out during all four seasons.

As I said before, Irvington Park had EVERYTHING !!! Baseball fields, football fields, basketball courts, a track path, great hills, a beautiful pond, climbable trees, swings, merry-go-round, see-saw, sandbox, tetherball, ping pong tables, tennis courts etc. And we took full advantage of everything. Bike riding was so cool there.  The summers were the best. The Essex County Park Commission (ECPC) operated out of the building you see in the picture above. And inside that building were all the supplies we needed to play whatever we wanted to play. We played football, baseball, softball, basketball, wiffleball, stickball, badminton, tetherball, etc. to our hearts content. And during the winters, they would freeze the pond and we would all go ice-skating. It seemed like the whole town showed up for ice-skating. And we’d go sledding as well. Needless to say, we just “lived” in that park.

Later, I will talk a bit about the people themselves in our clique.
